With a reported net worth of $1.4 billion by San Antonio Express-News, Billy Joe “Red” McCombs is ranked as the 913th richest man in the world in 2012. He started raking in his billions by selling cars – Ford Edsels. At his prime, he owned 55 dealerships which he still has to date.

Born in 1927, Billy Joe Combs became famous for his nickname “Red” because of his hair color. This name stuck until now. He is famous not only for his business but also in his ventures into sports. He was the former owner of famous teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and the Minnesota Vikings.

Just last year, he hosted the inaugural Formula One Grand Prix race in Texas at the new race track, the Circuit of the Americas.

He is the founder of the Red McCombs Automotive Group in San Antonio Texas, Chairman of Academi and a co-founder of Clear Channel Communications.


Football players are some of the highest-paid athletes in the world, with the sport having one of the most avid fan bases. Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the few football superstars who have made it to iconic status, not only for their skill in the game but also for their net worth as players and as product endorsers.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the forward for football team Real Madrid and captain of the Portuguese national team, has consistently topped the ranks of the decade’s highest-paid athletes and made history by becoming the most expensive football player ever after closing a deal to transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid. Aside from his huge earnings in football, Ronaldo has signed deals to endorse popular brands such as Emporio Armani, Nike, Coca-Cola, Motorola, KFC, Herbalife and more. He has been named the third-highest grossing footballer after David Beckham and Lionel Messi, has published a book entitled “Moments,” has been featured in video games, television shows and magazine covers and continues to dominate as one of the most marketable faces in football.

In his school days, Robert Garrett said that “in a manner of speaking”, he has elected himself to the board of Princeton. In 1905, Garrett was invited to be a part of the board of John Hopkins, his former alma mater in his hometown in Baltimore. Because he esteemed Princeton and “his desire [was] to serve her and her only,” he sought the advice of President Wilson. He was advised to decline the invitation of Hopkins. In 1906, Garrett was invited by President Wilson to the Princeton board.

Garrett was only 29 when he became a Princeton trustee. He served the university for 40 years in which period he served as charter trustee. He served for another 16 years as trustee emeritus.

In his undergraduate years, Garrett was an excellent athlete, having participated in a few track and field events. In 1896, Garrett organized an expedition and financed its efforts to join the revived Olympic Games in Athens with three of his classmates. He became a standout in the Olympiad that year, with two first places and two second places.

Garrett also helped to organize an archaeological expedition to Syria in 1899. He started collecting Near Eastern manuscripts, which he donated to the university. Today, his keeps are known as The Garrett Collection of Near eastern Manuscripts.

The most famous player ever to be associated with golf may be Tiger Woods, but his contemporaries are not far behind when it comes to excelling in the game, and of course, in excelling at fame and fortune because of the game. Phil Mickelson, an American golfer, ranks as one of the world’s top ten wealthiest and most valuable athletes, having reached a 2nd overall in the modern history of golf.

Like many top professional athletes, Phil Mickelson didn’t stop at merely playing golf. His endorsements and earnings have made him the second-highest paid athlete in 2011, with revenues of more than 62 million dollars. Among Mickelson’s top sponsors have been Rolex, Barclay’s, Callaway Golf, Ford, Bearing Point, Titleist and the medical drug Enbrel for treating psoriatic arthritis. Phil Mickelson entered the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2011 and was inducted in 2012 for his championship wins and overall contribution to the game of golf.

Playing an integral role in ESPN’s success for three-plus decades, Jed Drake joined the company shortly following its launch in 1979 and currently serves as Senior Vice President and Executive Producer of Event Production, a role he assumed in 2000. Responsible for spearheading a number of initiatives that helped solidify ESPN’s reputation as an innovator in the field of sports broadcasting, Drake laid the foundation for his future accomplishments after graduating from Boston University in 1978. Leveraging his Bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting and Film to obtain a position with NBC Sports, he amassed a wide breadth of experience as a Freelance Production Assistant for NBC’s popular programming endeavor, Major League Baseball Game of the Week.

Eager to pursue new challenges, Jed Drake opted to shift his focus away from freelancing when he stepped in as the sports anchor at WPTZ-TV, an NBC affiliate station based in Plattsburgh, New York. Over the course of the next two years, Drake undertook several large-scale projects that included supervising the station’s coverage of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Held at Lake Placid in close proximity to Plattsburgh, the Winter Olympics provided Drake with the perfect opportunity to display his multifaceted skill set for a national audience.

Jed Drake left WPTZ for ESPN after the Winter Olympics came to an end. Directing the fledgling network as it expanded its remote sports production ventures, Drake earned a successive string of promotions that placed him in charge of varied facets of ESPN’s programming schedule, from coverage of the America’s Cup in Fremantle, Australia to the network’s national broadcasts of Major League Baseball games. Today, Jed Drake maintains responsibility for approximately 6,000 hours of programming annually. Bringing unsurpassed coverage of NBA, NFL, and MLB games to a global audience, he also oversees ESPN’s golf, tennis, and college sports divisions. Spearheading a move into high-definition broadcasting while constantly seeking alternate avenues to increase ratings, Drake remains an essential part of the ESPN family and looks forward to a bright future at the helm of this top network.

George Steinbrenner moved on to become one of the most notorious owners of a baseball team in the history of sports after he bought the New York Yankees in 1972. He ran into a bit of a trouble with a financial scandal in 1990 but he was able to clear that up, earn reinstatement, and continue in his involvement with the management of the team until his death. Steinbrenner probably owed his tenacity to his father Henry whose work ethic taught George to always work as hard as, if not harder, than anyone working for him.

Before the New York Yankees, Steinbrenner bought a minor league basketball, the Cleveland Pipers, in 1960 for $125,000. This wasn’t much of an investment though because within two years the basketball team collapsed, making Steinbrenner lose over $25 million. His gamble with the New York Yankees paid off really well though because the man was estimated to be worth $1.6 billion at the time of his death.

Steve Sabol was a man that revolutionized the sports broadcasting industry. Along with his father, Sabol co-founded NFL Films in the early 1960s to create television programs, commercials, documentaries, feature films, and other kinds of programming for the National Football League (NFL). Sabol and his father were credited with advances in various production techniques like setting highlights with pop music and reverse angle replays. Sabol had a knack for storytelling that blended really well with the kind of creativity he had and his passion for the game, inspiring athletes, artists, and sports fans and entrepreneurs to achieve their dreams.

According to Steve Sabol, the game to him is as much of an art as it is sport. He and his father were recognized for their contributions and were given the Lifetime Achievement Emmy by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2003. Sabol alone had won 35 Emmys for his work in writing, editing, cinematography, producing, and directing. No one has actually earned that many Emmys in so many different categories as Sabol did. And as an artist, he has had his works shown at New York’s ArtExpo, Miami’s Avant Gallery, Washington’s Govinda Gallery, Fort Worth’s Milan Gallery, and Moorestown’s Davidson Gallery. He also authored a poem known as “The Autumn Wind” which was later on adopted by the Oakland Raiders as their unofficial anthem.

Steve Sabol was born in Moorestown in New Jersey. He went to Colorado College and played for the college’s football team and was also part of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He and his father founded NFL Films when he finished college. Before NFL Films though, he also had a production company called Blair Motion Picture, named after his sister. Sabol died on September 18, 2012 and was honored by the NFL with a video tribute before every game for week 3.

John Magnier, with his piercing stare and ubiquitous fedora, certainly looks it, but his nickname, “The Boss,” has little to do with corporate settings. Once a Senator in the Irish Parliament, John Magnier is considered the country’s most prominent name in the equine business – a top-rated thoroughbred stud owner and horse breeder. In fact, the whole world considers him to be the most influential man in horseracing and breeding.

This Irish born-and-bred tycoon showed a talent for breeding horses from as early as 15 years old, when he had to take over the family farm following his father’s death. After that, it was a climb to the top as Magnier took over Coolmore Stud and turned it into what is now the biggest, most extensive and arguably best stallion breeding and thoroughbred nursing operations on the planet. His other investments include a 28.89 percent stake in the very lucrative football team, Manchester United. With an estimated wealth of at least 2 billion Euros, Magnier is considered one of Europe’s wealthiest men, proving that when it comes to business, he’s not just horsing around.

Boxing fans know Bob Arum as well as their favorite boxers. As the founder and chief executive officer of Top Rank, Arum’s name is always on the headlines—especially when there’s a huge fight being set.  His professional boxing promotion company has been responsible for some of the biggest bouts that went down in boxing history.

Arum has lived a charmed life ever since he was a child. He went to the best schools and received high honors; clearly, he was a man with a bright future. These ventures, according to his fans, make De La Hoya the best pound for pound businessman. But business is not his only passion. He is also fighting for a win in some of L.A.’s poorest neighborhoods through Golden Boy Partners. De La Hoya is committed to provide more opportunities to poverty-stricken Mexican-Americans like him.
